Larimar Origin & Physical Properties
Larimar is a rare blue colored variety of the silicate mineral called Pectolite with the Dominican Republic its only known origin on earth. Its colors vary from light powder blue and white to deeper shades of turquoise blue. Pectolite is a silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. The unique blues of Larimar are caused by the addition of copper which replaces the calcium to various degrees, resulting in its variation of blue color shading.
Larimar was formed when ancient miocene volcanic rocks erupted within the limestone deposits along the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and their cavities were replaced by blue pectoite deposits. They were later carried in alluvial erosions down towards the gravelly beaches.
Bright baby-blue Larimar is the most valuable with the light weakly colored blue to white stones being of less value. Sometimes the polished stones contain patches of reds and browns caused by oxidation and hematite inclusions.
