Unique Qualities
A marquis shaped Boulder Opal from Queensland, Australia, with fossilized host rock and flashes of white opal. Boulder Opal forms within cavities of ironstone boulders and fossilized sandstone. It was formed when silica-rich water seeped down into fissures of the host rock and slowly solidified into spheres of opal over millions of years.
Gem Opal is a hydrated amorphous silica. The internal structure of gem quality Opal causes it to diffract light, causing a play of color, which can display virtually all colors from blue, to pink, green, yellow, white and black. Opal has microscopic spheres that create the play of color called opalescence.
