Angelic Green

Seraphinite

Seraphinite Origin & Physical Properties

Seraphinite is a green form of clinochrore, belonging to the chlorite mineral group. It is a magnesium iron aluminum silicate hydroxide. When polished, it has a silvery shimmer caused by thousand of mica inclusions. It often has radial patterns of alternating green an pearly white that can appear like the rings of an ancient tree. It is fairly soft stone with a hardness of 4 Mohs and is not suitable for rings but is durable enough for pendants, necklaces and beads.

The trade name ‘Seraphinite’ is derived from the Greek word ‘seraphim’ meaning  ‘winged angel’, named for its chatoyant patterns that can appear like the fine wings of an angel. It was first discovered in 1851 in Pennsylvania. Since that time important deposits of Seraphinite have been discovered in New York, Spain, Russia, Turkey and Italy.
