Nuummite Origin & Physical Properties
Nuumite is a metamorphic rock made up of the minerals ferrite and anthophyllite. To date, this stone has only been discovered in Greenland. Nuummite is a black stone with flashes of blue and silver iridescence caused by metallic-like layers of Anthophyllite, Pyrite, and Gederite. Some call Nuummite the oldest mineral composite on earth, having formed over three billion years ago, born of volcanic disruption.
The name Nuummite is derived from Nuuk, the remote, desolate region of Greenland that is the only source for the rare stone. It was discovered in 1982 and over the last few years it has begun to become more popular within the gem world. It is generally sliced into slabs which are then cut into cabochons or carvings.
