precious pink beryl

MORGANITE

Morganite Origin & Physical Properties

Morganite is the gem name given to pink to peach colored Beryl. Morganite is a beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate that forms in a hexagonal crystal system. This rose colored Beryl is quite rare and its distinctive color is caused by traces of manganese.

Morganite was first discovered by J.P. Morgan’s personal gemologist, George F. Kunz in Madagascar in 1910. The stone was named after the banker and avid gem collector. The key localities for Morganite are Brazil and Madagascar, with other fine gems coming in smaller quantities from other Beryl locations around the world.

It may be less known than its more famous siblings of Emerald, & Aquamarine, but with its popularity surging,  prices have skyrocketed for high quality pink gems with good luster and clarity. Morganite has become the second most colored gemstone for engagement rings after sapphire.

Generally, Morganite has little to no inclusions and a fine sparkling luster. Bright pink Morganite’s fetch the highest price with rich peach colored stones coming in a close second. It has a hardness of 7.5-8 which makes it sufficiently durable for any type of jewelry including rings.
