SUGILITE

Sugilite Origin & Physical Properties

Sugilite is a rare purple, to violet pink cyclosilicate mineral that is found in only a few locations worldwide. It is a complex mineral with a make up of potassium, sodium, lithium, iron, manganese, and aluminum silicate. Sugilite is opaque and is commonly polished into cabochons for jewelry use. High quality Sugilite has a saturated purple color, while lower quality Sugilite has a more dull color and grey to black manganese inclusions in its makeup. It has a hardness of 6.5 - 7 Mohs and does not cleave easily making it quite a durable stone for use in jewelry.

Sugilite is a polycrystalline aggregate made up of tiny crystallites oriented in various directions and of varying sizes. It was first discovered in 1944 on the Iwagi Islet, Japan. Later, important deposits in South Africa in the 1980’s brought the stone to higher prominence. Sugilite can also be found in Quebec, Canada, NSW, Australia and Tuscany, Italy. Sugilite has been a fairly popular stone within the metaphysical community since the 90’s and high quality Sugilite gemstones can be fairly expensive, costing more than most opaque gemstones.
