PHENAKITE

Phenakite Origin & Physical Properties

Phenakite is a rare crystalized mineral comprised of beryllium orthosilicate. The mineral forms in rhombohedral shaped crystals of the trigonal crystal system. Phenakite is quite hard with a 7.5-8 Mohs. Phenakite is often colorless to grey but also forms in slightly yellow crystals and very rarely forms in a pale pink color.

Phenakite is sometimes faceted but it is not particularly distinctive and is comparable to white topaz. Will formed Phenakite crystals in their raw form are the most sought after by collectors. Because of their rarity, small clear crystals with naturally faceted surface texture can be quite valuable compared to other clear crystals like Quartz or Topaz. Sources for Phenakite include Brazil, Russia, Czechia, Myanmar, Austria and the United States.
