FLUORITE

Fluorite Origin & Physical Properties

Fluorite is a crystalized form of calcium fluoride and belongs to the family of halide minerals. It forms in the isometric cubic crystal system. It often forms in perfect cubic crystals, in clusters and in twinned cubic crystal forms. Fluorite is most often found with impurities which impart a wide range of colors. Every color of the rainbow can be found in various shades in Fluorite specimens. The most common colors are purple, blue, green and yellow. Color zoning and color banding is common. Fluorite’s exposure to natural fluxes in radiation also effected the coloration of individual crystals.

Fluorite is a soft mineral with a hardness of 4 Mohs and has perfect cleavage, meaning it is easily susceptible to knocks and can fracture along the cleavage lines. Its use in jewelry is limited for this reason, but beautiful specimens of Fluorite are popular amongst collectors. Fluorite often shows strong fluorescence. This means when you illuminate the crystal with an ultraviolet light, it will glow because of the activator particles within its atomic structure.
